Start with @overleaf. And start with a simple template.

I also found this useful to work through to get a feel for it:https://www.overleaf.com/learn/latex/Learn_LaTeX_in_30_minutes …

Eventually, one will need/want to install a local LaTeX compiler and editor. But I totally agree, as I and others already said, the stuff online on @overleaf is perfect for beginners. 😊

Olivia - can you explain (to this pretty much beginner!) what the differences would be between a local compiler & editor and Overleaf? And which program you'd recommend?

Ah, the main difference is you can work offline. A good one on Linux is Kile. I can't say what's good on other OSes — but I guess probably MikTex for OSX and Windows. Here is a hand list of (some of the) options: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_TeX_editors …

The main drawback is it's harder, you are faced with the bugs more directly, of course SO exists, etc. The main positives are that it's so much faster (infinitely faster if you have no internet connection, of course) and that you can do a lot more complex stuff with full control.

It's not for you if you are happy with @overleaf online. I personally can't stand using online @overleaf for anything but the tiniest project. Nonetheless, I continue to use @overleaf regardless because it offers version control for my documents, figures, and slides using git.

Thank you so much, that's really helpful. I think I'll be sticking with @Overleaf for a while yet!
