Ok so any tips on how to get started with LaTeX? What do I need to do?

Olivia - can you explain (to this pretty much beginner!) what the differences would be between a local compiler & editor and Overleaf? And which program you'd recommend?

Ah, the main difference is you can work offline. A good one on Linux is Kile. I can't say what's good on other OSes — but I guess probably MikTex for OSX and Windows. Here is a hand list of (some of the) options: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_TeX_editors …

The main drawback is it's harder, you are faced with the bugs more directly, of course SO exists, etc. The main positives are that it's so much faster (infinitely faster if you have no internet connection, of course) and that you can do a lot more complex stuff with full control.
