In 1971, all the undergrads in my maths course were offered an optional FORTRAN course, because it was thought it would be useful. I took it. It was (eventually)¹ And here we are in [checks calendar] 2018, still not sure. 1. (next tweet)

There weren't that many computers around then mostly mainframes. Code entered via punched cards. But eventually that course germinated into a career.

Being able to code is why I'm still in science. Honestly. And it's literally saved my life.
