My guess would be that the driving factor is probably a lack of faculty confidence in teaching, but still, bring in faculty from other departments in that case! This really seems like it ought to be changed. Even just 2 semesters worth of coding would do A LOT!

The more I think about this, the more surprised I am that it isn't part of the standard undergrad curriculum. In physics, python was compulsory every year. When I meet engis who can only use Excel or Origin, it seems so limiting to the depth of analysis.
