I actually think, given the overwhelming evidence that given the right push kids can do it, that it’s not hard to code at all. I think it’s a psychological barrier rather than a difficulty one.
For me, yes. But I'm loathe to assume that's true for everybody.

I suspect that the formal knowledge = hard narrative just isn't empirically defensible unless you can calibrate task difficulty on a common scale. Is writing a hard essay answer easier than a hard programming exercise? Which implies coding is hard is an unhelpful myth ...
-
But notice that you made a bait & switch (I do not mean you meant offence :). Good Poem vs functioning program. And you leave underspecified the problem. I enjoy writing poems, stories, essays and programs and none of them is inherently harder or easier than the others.
-
What makes it hard or easy is the scope of the program. For me, it is easier to write a limerick than it is to understand call by current continutation. Writing a passable story is easier than writing a probabilistic programming framework but writing a great story is harder. etc.
-
And programming something that can read and make non-trivial deductions from free text is at least as hard (and probably harder) than anything in philosophy because similar to what you say, in phil, you can operate on a more zoomed out level without needing to address details. heh
-
If you meant there are no problems in philosophy harder than that, it's surprising that we're still debating millennia-old problems.
-
Hmm if I turn the frame a bit, look at this way? The best philosophical work that has ever been done by a human is not harder to get to than the contribution of a single human (of course can't be de novo) to writing a program capable of reading papers and making deductions.
-
Agreed. Humans tend to push themselves very hard in any field, most without demanding vast sums of money to do it.
