TBH we are getting to (not at, before someone jumps in) the point where I don't think it's really practical to do any kind of research degree or project without a basic knowledge of programming. Even in the humanities.

Also, I doubt very much there is anyone doing a research related degree of any gender, race or any other descriptor who is not smart enough to learn it.

Agree! I've taught coding (R, JavaScript, and even Java!) to many students who *thought* they weren't smart enough, but anyone smart enough to be at uni *can* learn coding. Many said they felt empowered when they wrote their first functions.

I think we really shouldn't systematically deprive our students from learning this increasingly important skill.
