Same. Maybe he is feeling personally attacked, which I’m sure many of us never intended. But it happens. I do sometimes block people as a group for my mental health as well. Hope it’s simply for temporary mental space.

It's understandable he blocked us on some level. But it's also understandable for us to reply to him. He came here to demand something.

I've been trying to follow this argument but I'm not sure I have all the pieces of the jigsaw. Is someone arguing that all papers need to pre-register everything?

Yes in various combinations. Sometimes it is explicit, more often it is implied by a pattern of assertions.

OK, I'll out myself. I've meant that when I've said that. I'm a grad student in social psych so I think pre reg is the bees knees. Can someone ELI5 why/when pre reg is not useful, when it does allow for exploratory research?

Sure, they are potential exceptions. If it were up to me, any paper without pre-registration, data and code would be branded "exploratory opinion piece", no exception.

It boils down to a deep misunderstanding of how to/we do modelling.

Thanks for the links. I'd go further: a deep misunderstanding of how science is done. What a load of parochial, self-serving nonsense.

So, anyway: does anyone know of anything approaching a comprehensive review of (a) what problems we're trying to solve (in this respect) and (b) what solutions have been proposed? Rather than piecemeal, domain-specific stuff?

There hasn't been much in the way of improving exploratory work apart from saying that we should stop framing it as confirmatory in papers, which i agree with. But the challenge is then to get journals to treat such work seriously because we're in a heavily confirmatory culture.

So with these changes, exploratory work pays the steepest price. We need journals to seriously commit to papers that say: here's this thing i found, it replicates but I have no idea what it means. Science used to work that way.
