In a perfect world, PR would help modellers document the process and the divergence from prior, helping us understand where our theories are weakest and also enabling better confirmatory work of the original exploratory piece.

Good thoughts Micah. I think another crucial issue is to weigh the costs and benefits of exhaustive documentation. Against the obvious benefits of documenting the entire model development process one should weigh the costs of writing, curating and reading those documents. >

      > At some point along the continuum the benefits of documentation would start to pale against the cost of managing and reading all of that information. As scientists we're all making choices about which of our nonviable ideas are worth discussion and this is healthy for the field

The rhetoric of the "I think the hardline 'full blown registered reports or bust' stance" people seems to have shifted now to "but I never said that". Interesting switch, I wonder if that means a deeper understanding or just a reflex?

I’d be curious to see some examples of that. Reconsidering views is good, ofc, but I’m curious because you linked to some tweets the other day arguing they said RR or bust when they explicitly said other work should be published too.

Well, this was the tweet you took as a suggestion that only preregistered work should be published. It pretty clearly doesn’t say that, which is why I was curious what the other examples you’d seen said.https://twitter.com/robustgar/status/1043453476397834241?s=21 …

I really like @lisadebruine’s idea: Journals are now exclusively for registered reports, everything else is published as preprint and reviewed post-publication.

It's part of a series of things people have said with very extreme views. Otherwise why do you think @bradpwyble and @micahgallen think what we think?

I think you're under the impression that if we don't dedicate hours trawling through tweets to defend our opinion on this that we are by definition wrong. But I actually have a day job as do others and twitter is nasty to search. If you haven't felt the vibe, well, that's fine.

That all work should be published (it says that explicitly) but that if there is a place for journals and pre-pub peer review it is providing the administrative infrastructure for RRs (which aren’t only for confirmatory testing).

You are pretty clearly being disingenuous with your bad-faith take that this is some sort push to impose confirmatory testing on everyone, since you’ve kept going with that interpretation even when people have explicitly said it isn’t and have explained what it is.

I can see how you might have equated ‘journal’ with ‘publish’ and ‘RR’ with ‘confirmatory’ without pausing for thought, but persisting with that reading of it when people have clarified those misunderstandings isn’t helpful.
