While applied stuff is great, and I love this thread, sometimes it's also good to feel comfortable to admit that basic science is "just" basic science. Some science might never have a practical use. Basically I really agree with what the author of the original thread said hence why I said "I love this thread" but I used it as a jumping off point because they only highlighted a deep issue.

Yep, I completely agree that we should feel comfortable with basic science and it slightly grates on me that we should have to do the applied science dance as a rule.

But that said, I also get why the public demands the applied angle.

As do I. Totally. It's a shame and in fact basic science is something they indirectly demand too. It's something we and they have decided to fund either via their representatives or via some social contract another way.
