Yes and no. It’s possible that a specific field in itself is pseudoscience, so we do want to be able to say no to a specific subfield. As far as I’m concerned, I’d like to see falsifiable predictions being generated from qual.

I would disagree. I think they should be evaluated by their own goals and not ours. At the minimum, there definitely needs to be more conversation across disciplines.

So we should just be ok eg w psychoanalysis (in the way it operates now?)? Where does it stop?

I do not believe in demarcation. I believe disciplines will sort things out from within and over time, just like social psych is trying to do right now. As long as they abide by basic ethical standards (e.g., no harm), I don’t think we should dictate who should do what.

Otherwise physics would(?)/could have gotten away with all of social sciences long ago (maybe some still would) instead of letting them to evolve. Epistemic and all other types of diversity requires tolerance, compromise, and patience.

Yes, they absolutely would have. Likewise behaviorists would have eliminated cognitive.

The strong need for a general demarcation criterion I view as a slippery slope to
#scientism. In practice, they often coincide. Not saying it does for you Hans, but the (mis)applications of this line of thought are felt in broader cultural context.2 replies 1 retweet 5 likes -

Here the latest example in my TL: https://twitter.com/irisvanrooij/status/1064158489881313280?s=21 … If you watch the video you’ll see that these politicians defend transphobia and gender normativity by appeal to (neuro)science. In reality it is

and for the appeal to neuroscience for this (which is horrible), I think people in those areas will grab anything that looks sufficiently coherent to them, even when it is clearly wrong.

Yes. And I think we, as scientists, have a responsibility to battle scientism.

Also let's not lie/ignore, some scientists are in fact bigots themselves and/or ignorant to the point of negligence.
