Sadly, this seems to be emprically true. Is Open See really, inevitably, hostile to agreeable people...https://twitter.com/talyarkoni/status/1061004494937436160 …

I read ‘kind’ as very different from ‘nice’.
-
Eg speaking painful truth can be a kind thing to do, even if it is not being nice. Nice had much less sincere connotation for me. Same with ‘polite’, or ‘civil’.
-
As for Dennett’s piece, I think indeed ‘kindness’ may be the wrong word there. Better ‘charity’ in argumentation. Never experienced Dennet’s arguments as especially kind.

But yes agreed
@o_guest these words (including kindness) can be twisted to actually hide ill-intent and even abuse. -
But to clarify: I do still agree with the OP. The path on which this thread developed could in turn be twisted to be against Tom’s stance. I think that would be unfortunate.

I'm with Tom 100%. But I think, like
@ContraPoints says, we live in an age of aesthetics and rhetoric sadly goes a much longer way than logic.
