Is it strange that I feel deeply troubled that an influential open science advocate who cannot even adhere to Wheaton's law is planning to tell politicians that scientists need to be forced to behave the ways that he or they see fit?

This is not about guidelines for scientific ethics, but about single-minded notions of what "good" vs. "bad" science practice is, which will impoverish scientific thinking and destroy opportunities for exploration and scientific discovery, and create instead "cook book" science.

We have been able to witness how the advocates for "cook book" science will not shy away from pilling on or harassing people online, or defending such acts. Imagine what will happen if these ideas are translated into rules and laws and then top-down enforced on scientists.

It’s more fun if you know that the Australian government just got caught interfering with the grant process and essentially did not award grants that passed peer review etc because they didn’t like the topic. But I’m sure he doesn’t care about those sorts of things

I saw.
It is really really really troubling. And I am sorry my country is sending a delegate that seems to plan to make matters worse in already a poor climate for unbiased science funding.2 replies 1 retweet 2 likes -

Thank you both so much for speaking up. It's getting hella fascist in here.

Btw, cued by the Australian grant scandal reference: Not unrelevant perhaps that the same person has been lecturing humanities researchers here on twitter, not long ago, for doing their research all wrong. Humanities isn’t even his expertise.
