Every time I (and others) say there's s certain bro elements within certain #openscience circles (which I like to collectively call #bropenscience because they don't care about the inclusivity/diversity aspect of it) somebody will insunuate I am/we are against open science.

I am seeing a split - there are people using "bro" to highlight a possible lack of concern for inclusivity; and there are people using "bro" to highlight what they perceive as inappropriate methods/tone/media of critique....

I don't see these as separate things; there are...let's call them "aggressive communication patterns"...that tend to be used by men. Their source is power and entitlement. A lack of diversity means that such communication patterns are normalised, though they exhaust others.

I grew up in online discussions (BBSs, USENET, IRC, web forums) and it took me a long time to see 1) how widespread it is in online culture, 2) how bad it could be, and 3) and that I need to keep it in check myself and listen to what others have to say about it.

think you can get some of the bros to learn to listen, do some honest self-reflection, and change their behaviors? Goddess knows they’d rather become self-righteous angry martyrs than listen to a brown woman.

I guess I can just say that I try not to be that guy, because I've been that guy (I was also the white dude in the political philosophy class that didn't "get" critical race theory, and really hated when my Latina professor rolled her eyes at me). Learning to listen takes years.

It's very hard for everybody and even harder when you are brought up/live in a world where you don't have to listen to get by. I do think, Richard, if you did say something you, unlike say Monica or myself, will be listened to with higher prob. So that is useful info for an ally.
