I am seeing a split - there are people using "bro" to highlight a possible lack of concern for inclusivity; and there are people using "bro" to highlight what they perceive as inappropriate methods/tone/media of critique....

I don't see these as separate things; there are...let's call them "aggressive communication patterns"...that tend to be used by men. Their source is power and entitlement. A lack of diversity means that such communication patterns are normalised, though they exhaust others.

I grew up in online discussions (BBSs, USENET, IRC, web forums) and it took me a long time to see 1) how widespread it is in online culture, 2) how bad it could be, and 3) and that I need to keep it in check myself and listen to what others have to say about it.

Agreed...my default is that if someone has a concern, you listen and take it seriously. People don't just make up stuff (or not enough to over-ride this stance...back to T1 and T2 errors).

And I see your point on what I am calling a split perhaps at least partly originating from the same underlying cause - though I would still land on (Support Inclusivity) & (Not Filter Critique).

I am glad to hear you support inclusivity. That's huge because in the past on this issue I/we had almost no support from men in open science. Even just a few months ago (the most recent time we brought up inclusivity) there was no real support other than from a handful of women.

Also this idea of a split... I never felt comfortable with the bros. Some of the most bro-y bros have blocked me called me names. It's just we've been quiet(er) and the bros have been vocal.

It's nowhere near the same level of offense as being personally attacked, but I have been blocked by at least one person that I think found me too Bro-y. Tricky.

OK, but have you seen the dogpiles and sealioning I've had to endure because I mention that I think open science should strive for inclusivity?

And not just me... so many other women that I will not tag for obvious reasons. I can genuinely dig up (some of) the times this has happened to me if you want to see. Back in 2017 it was so bad my Twitter was unusable. I considered leaving the site.

What you are describing is abusive, which I have never experienced, and I have no reason not to take you at your word about it.

Thank you. I was genuinely offering though because you seeing it might help you understand and propose solutions etc.
