It seems to be the nature of twitter (and FB), the way it's designed, that inflammatory posts (including bullying) get more attention than other stuff. So we need better social media platforms.

Uh, we also need to call out the bullying, right? Now it sounds as if we merely need to shift the attention away from it, in the service of OS image we turn a blind eye?

No, I wasnt' saying that. I do think it should be called out. Just that occasional twitter users get the wrong impression of bullying being more representative, due to the algorithms.

I think the opposite is the case here. It seems that many users do *not* see the bullying or harassment happening, and individuals suffer. And even in this thread it was questioned that it was really happening.

Ah ok, interesting point. Still, on average (as reflected in the Chronicle article), seems that both social media and click-driven journalism over-emphasises the bullying, but I could be wrong.

It’s not a matter of how representative bullies are of a community. It is a matter of them having disproportionate influence in a community, especially on those with less power. So it always makes sense to stand up as strongly as possible against bullying whenever and wherever

it exists. This type of behavior thrives when ignored. It needs to be marginalized explicitly and forcefully. So it makes a lot of sense to highlight and condemn individual examples. It’s less important or relevant whether they’re representative.

Yes, but they need to be called out individually for this to work, otherwise this will drive people away (a la “why would I get involved with something that’s so full of bros”) *and* individual bad actors are unbothered.

No. They *do* drive people out. Community is responsible for tolerating them. You cannot task anyone with standing up against bullies individually. It’s a shared responsibility and that’s the only way to stop the behavior.

But someone needs to call out individual bad actors, otherwise it’s just smoke? And I’ve said this somewhere else but I truly do not think that the community is tolerating bullies - people are called out for any truly bad behaviour, and they do see (some) consequences for this.

I don't think we should keep going in circles here TBH. I'm glad you agree that bros aren't welcome. Hopefully we can all work together to keep open science inclusive.
