I totally get that. And for me, that's one of the most difficult things about gender bias. It's a whole other level of thinking that guys don't have to process, i.e. "is it my gender, or is it me, or are they just being assholes and it's not me or my gender?"

I personally don't perceive tons of gender bias in OS, but I do see the harsh criticism coming primarily from men so I can understand how that perception developed. 2 things I'd like to see: Post-pub critiques that are more thoughtful and constructive, + more female voices heard

Sure, not all men or all OS advocates are the kinds of "bros" @aidenhorner was complaining about. But the #9ReplyGuy action that @ProfJessTracy was getting was condescending and rude, and used OS as its "cover." I think it's pretty important to call that kind of behavior out.

I am a little curious if @lakens has responded to men who've posted their papers on twitter by suggesting they p-curve their body of work to make sure there's no pattern that could lead to the removal of grants/awards. If so, then gender bias probably not relevant here.

These authors p-hacked their way into JPSP and are now sending off press releases like it is 2012. Because I feel really bad for the ECR's on this paper I'm skipping the obligatory Harvard joke. https://twitter.com/hardsci/status/974301083001475072 …

Also - these are clearly not my kindest tweets. I fully admit that. This is sort of a trigger for me. I ask and complain about it (there was a very nice paper in 2011 telling us to stop - I think people should have read it by now).

Based on anecdotal experience from my own life: I criticize things on a regular basis. Whenever I criticize gender studies, or sometimes when I criticize women, my own gender is brought up. But I am pretty sure if you'd analyze all my tweets, I don't discriminate.

Personally, I think dynamic can still be gendered, even if men in the conversation treat men & women in same unpleasant way. Because typically the woman in the conversation cannot be similarly harsh & direct in their responses without bearing disproportional social consequences.

Still makes the dynamic unequal IMO. Not saying we‘d want to enable harsh communication by women. Rather, in an inclusive open science community where constructive criticism is possible kindness is a catalyzer IMO not an obstacle or silencer, as some bros seem to want to view it.

But here I go: “Bros” is just another word for “tone”. The Open Science movement does not have a real problem with either. (2/4)

Every time I (and others) say there's s certain bro elements within certain #openscience circles (which I like to collectively call #bropenscience because they don't care about the inclusivity/diversity aspect of it) somebody will insunuate I am/we are against open science. 🙄
