I want to respectfully refute the narrative that people who advocate for open science are “bros” or are sexist. This is the opposite of my experience, and I’m very concerned about this emergent narrative. Please get excited about OS, there is a lot to be excited abouthttps://twitter.com/aidanhorner/status/1052894902760046596 …

Oh twitter. Every time I want to get excited by open science, I see a twitter conversation where OS bros are aggressively accusing someone of bad practice (that someone happens to be a women, pure coincidence right...). Just don't OK?

Agree there are lots of good bros (in the true brotherly sense) out there. But when you're a woman who tweets about your work and several dudes respond with insinuations about your whole career, it's tough to not feel like there's a gender dynamic at play (even if there's not).

I totally get that. And for me, that's one of the most difficult things about gender bias. It's a whole other level of thinking that guys don't have to process, i.e. "is it my gender, or is it me, or are they just being assholes and it's not me or my gender?"

I personally don't perceive tons of gender bias in OS, but I do see the harsh criticism coming primarily from men so I can understand how that perception developed. 2 things I'd like to see: Post-pub critiques that are more thoughtful and constructive, + more female voices heard

Sure, not all men or all OS advocates are the kinds of "bros" @aidenhorner was complaining about. But the #9ReplyGuy action that @ProfJessTracy was getting was condescending and rude, and used OS as its "cover." I think it's pretty important to call that kind of behavior out.

...and I just want to make sure that you guys know that I'm not intending to defend that guy or any other guy/girl who is condescending and rude. What I'm intending to defend is the idea of OS, and to make sure that it is inclusive of positive voices like mine (I hope) and yours

That's exactly why I created #bropenscience — like mentioned broism is prominent in the retoric/Tweets in certain spaces of open science. Hopefully we're not down the road of open scource (a sibling movement/community)!https://www.wired.com/2017/06/diversity-open-source-even-worse-tech-overall/ …

To avoid context collapse, I'm an open science and open source supporter, which is why I care about the movement/community.

If you think that the term #bropenscience means all open scientists are bros, you are missing 2 points: 1) those who use the term are pro open science, 2) they know that not all of open science is bropen science; clearly, otherwise there would be no need for a special signifier.
