Interesting video, but even in the video, not everybody trips. The main difference though, is that walking up steps is a highly automatic action. Science is not, or should not be. What happens if people are told that the step is a different height and to be extra careful?

Ideally the steps would be rebuilt. In the interim, a sign and some different paint on the step would help.

It's happened to me so often I've lost count. I assume the system works and I try to use it with my foot lifted the correct amount and NOPE the step is higher than I calculated and magically more effort is needed to get the to the next level.

The metaphor breaks down of course because in the real world for some people, the steps manifest as perfect with no need for minor adjustments. In other cases, of course, they are just as badly formed but the avoidance cost is lower for some, e.g.: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missing_stair …
