Usually smiles and waves are for pleasant situations, like when out running or hiking. But I do nod or otherwise indicate I respect each passerby as a person (regardless of gender), and their right to be in shared public space. And I apologize if we get in each other’s way.

This is a really interesting insight. You're being pleasant to avoid *provoking* an assault by offending someone. Woman are taking steps to avoid being the prey of someone actively scouting for a victim and intending to find one. You're not being hunted.

The idea that men don't hunt other men for real or imagined slights doesn't seem to stand up to scrutiny.

It sounds like it happens more than we know. In Texas alone it’s 2 in 5 women (sexually assaulted). That’s not to take away from the pain and scars men suffer at the hands of toxic males.

The behaviors required by men to avoid “provoking” aggregated assault vs. by women to avoid sexual assault are definitely different, but perhaps more similar than they appear. And similarly important? - overall rates of violence against both are similar: https://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/cv16.pdf …

The stat I referenced for sexual assault on women is Texas. General assault, I don’t have numbers or data on where they happen but I suspect assault on men is out in the community, women probably homes by people they know. Just a guess.

The problem is men are the perpetuators. Overwhelmingly. It's always men doing this. Masculinity is a broken gender.

Agreed. But perhaps we should stop looking at the victims, as if they're to blame, and focus on the pervasive toxic masculinity in society and how it affects everyone negatively, even, if not especially, those who are most symptomatic of it.

They're the conduits of toxic masculinity which harms society as a whole. We should work to dismantle that, whilst supporting those who have experienced direct violence, which will benefit everyone. Focusing on the victims of violence doesn't seem to be dismantling the kyriarchy.

I'm not trying to say "men are the real victims" because I see there are two sets of victims. 1) everyone, because society has issues 2) the people who have been on the receiving end of violence Both sets are real, but I wasn't suggesting ignoring the 2nd to focus on the 1st

And I was absolutely not suggesting that "the real victims" were those in the first group but not the second. If anything, the ones in the second group are "the real victims". But it seems that too many people say it's on the victims to have done more.

It's on everyone, but especially those who have systemic power, to dismantle the system that causes toxic masculinity. Being masculine, as far as I can tell, isn't the problem. But having male privilege and not confronting toxic masculinity is.
