Good point. It is tricky and I do appreciate the need for caution. Overall though it’s the discoveries and replications that make science wonderful. Glad you raised this issue for discussion.

But exploratory science is often about the result. Yes, the methods and approach need to be sound, but if we are in exploration mode we need to be alert for "interesting" findings.

Of course we do, but my point is we shouldn't be rewarding people based on whether they find them or appear to find them. That's the problem here.

That's fair. I guess the likelihood of finding something "interesting" in exploration mode is (or should be) linked to quality of methods, but then people should be judged on latter rather than former even if they are connected.

Yes that's exactly my point. The judgment of quality (and thus reward system) should always boil down to question and method and never whether the result is interesting, surprising etc.

I guess you will need to demolish the Great Man Theory! Something I certainly agree needs to be done for many reasons — primarily because it doesn't accurately explain the world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_man_theory …

The irony being if RRs become the norm in science, Chris will be held up in years to come as a great visionary :)

lol that will never happen, I assure you, but in the bizzare event that it does, it's a prize that belongs to at least 100 people including more than a few dead ones.

Unfortunately, none of us get to decide our perceived legacy (if we have one at all). You can see the "great man" thing still going on though. I have seen people on twitter who would say they are against the concept, and then write pieces about certain AI visionaries

I feel you might be confusing reality with what history will remember. Given track record, the spoils go to a single senior white dude, even if they didn't necessarily want all the credit.

Presumably. Who can say what history will say about all this, but hopefully the fact that it has happened very publicly from the beginning will help keep historians on the right track, assuming whoever ends up documenting all this cares about the facts.
