Anybody got some recommendations for hard sci-fi? Maybe something with software engineering would be cool? Super in the mood for some escapism.

Vernor Vinge is good for software engineering in sci-fi. Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan saga books are my standard recommendation for hardish sci-fi, but the role of computers in them feels very dated.

Oh, also if you haven't read Martha Wells's Murderbot stories you definitely should. They're great, and hard-ish and computer-ish (both in the "details elided" sense. There's not that much focus on the tech per se, but software matters quite a lot in them)

As a bonus, murderbot is also in the mood for some escapism. :-)

It turns out "Sarcastic android who just wants to be left alone and watch its TV shows" was the character I never knew I needed until I read these.
