Noticed indeed @tyrell_turing seems to suggest the brain *is* a TM. Personally, I think we need not make such claim. We can instead focus on *explanation*, and see TM computability as fundamental limit on computational *explanation* (assuming Church-Turing thesis ofc).

And, in any case, if anything is a TM it is the brain-body-environment system as a whole (as the world is (part of) the tape).

I kind of get the argument, but we have the connotative issue. The association with computational does not extend that far, I would guess, but call up the metaphor of brain as a pc/mac/mainframe. What words mean is....fuzzy

Not all NNs are Turing complete. So I'm not even sure the people making that argument are aware of what Turing complete even means...? To show a system, e.g., a programming language is Turing complete all you need to do is show it can express NAND. It's really simple.

*Conceptually simple. Also NOR is possible too.

Not sure what you mean
@asehelene. Do you mean people tend to associate "TM" with desktop computer and think of computational theory of mind as 'metaphor'?1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

Yes, very much so. Hence ”hardwired” etc. but my sense also, teaching masters, is they have zero background on algorithms, standard logic, etc. going thru the cog revolution including Turing is new to them.

Yes- internationally. I did cog psy in early 90 and had to learn c ++ Lisp and fid neural nets, some non linesr dynamics and math and logic in addition. Hard to find common ground for teaching theoretical aspects.

I always thought psy needed more formal things (I purdued it voluntarily) but it hasn’t happened. Very smart students, but formsl aspects still not huge part.

Agreed. I didn't do Psych but I'll argue for any undergrads to be taught to code (it's really that important). Thankfully at UCL they teach Python now, but not sure about UG.
