And I should add: Also how much one is willing to derail the discussion away from the question is revealing.

shrew and I have discussed this. One big difference between our chart and other lists of sexist tactics is that we didn’t specifically call out Derailing/Distracting. But that’s because we split it into several distinct (we think) techniques for doing that. 1/2

Tone Police and Himpathy (and Cookie) center the man’s feelings. The Prestige centers the woman’s low status / illegitimacy. Mansplainer and Sea Lion try to reduce the woman’s point to technical quibbles. Gaslighter tries to undermine the idea that misogyny even exists.

That’s why we didn’t have a Guy called The Derailer: it’s mostly derailing! But we thought these tactics were distinct enough (and can be handled in distinct ways) to merit being listed separately

Thanks
@o_guest for that link! Thanks@shrewshrew for clarifying! I was indeed thinking about what exact type of derailing it was, but given your analysis it seems in this particular case it is a mix of most of them. Making it such a moving target it seems.2 replies 0 retweets 2 likes - 1 more reply
