Sadly, yes, this had happened more than once recently. His role as a public skeptic has been very important, but the personal attacks have crossed a line.

1/2 A week after my blog post on tone in 2017, Coyne wrote a formal complaint to my uni, fabricating claims that I'm "aligned with racism", show "hostility towards patient populations", concluding that "something needs to be done quickly".

2/2 In 2018, he sued me in Dutch court for RT-ing open letter
@peterkinderman & blog post@DrDavidHealy. He didn't sue authors or anyone else who RT'd, only me. He lost & had to pay my lawyer. Despite 100% peer&uni support, this had severe impact on both work & private life.11 replies 10 retweets 142 likes -

Eiko, thank you for sharing your story. I was taken aback when you told me and others about this at SIPS. Not surprised that he’d harassed you (sadly), but at the depravity in the details. I hope you talking about it makes it harder for him to do the same to others

Thx Sanjay. Wrote this up as very detailed blog, including all details about harassment & court case, but publishing it turns out to be slow & difficult due to legal concerns (e.g. his complaint about me went to my Uni, & they are hesitant for me to share it in full). >

> And yes, the whole point of putting this online would be to make future allegations (e.g. about racism) much less plausible, and encourage folks to share this publicly as well. Seems likely he will continue to make up these claims about others. Blog intro draft reflects this:pic.twitter.com/byFZyN3QIa

(Obviously not saying we shouldn't take racism allegations seriously, but if someone makes them up repeatedly about early career researchers without any evidence in an apparent effort to smear them, well, we should take that seriously as well)

Eiko, your story triggered some memories of something (thankfully much milder) that I went through in grad school. Expressing skepticism about a dodgy method for assessing causality in a listserv & related usenet groups & calling out trolling by the person behind the method /1

earned a lovely mass email sent to all my faculty members. Thankfully someone vouched for me (good thing he was on relevant listserv!) and dept. basically decided the whole thing was not worth the bother. But it did definitely cause a few days of unneeded stress. /2
