I didn't mention any policy or to ban anything. I stated a preference for what I have experienced within my field on how academic culture manifests in the UK. Surely disliking academic culture [which is toxically anti-working-class] doesn't make me anti-working class, does it?

Socialising doesn’t have to be tied to seminars?
-
In my field, it really is. You have a talk/seminar then you have the drinks. But that is being phased out at my institution and where they can. I have a feeling some seminars are outside their control.

I think that's another example of a conflict between goals, with intersectional problems. My personal sympathy for the imbalance of parental responsibility for women in hetero relationships though isn't high - not my job as a gay man to fix how bad straight relationships are
-
I think it's more they did stats and found that women drop out of STEM mostly because of family responsibilities.
-
Yeah because they're in straighg families with a man who doesn't take equal share (just saw a great article one twitter today linked to that)
-
And maybe also the man earns more money (cause pay gap) so it makes more sense for the woman to stay home. Like it’s not just working hours that drive women/caretakers out of STEM
-
Isn't this erasing single mums, bi women? I'm really confused.
-
My original point was that harassers are responsible for driving more women out of academia than the mere presence of alcohol, so I’m just gonna reiterate that that’s the point of this discussion for me
-
It's certainly derailed.

For inclusiveness we have both pub after and the ability to schedule a chat during the day with an invited speaker. The dinner/drinks after are done as a thank you to the speaker and allows people busy during the day (i.e. PhD students) a chance to chat with speaker
