I mean I still think thats a shit reason for getting rid of alcohol, instead of getting rid of creepy inappropriate dudes

There're two separate issues IMHO which always come up. 1) Creepy behaviour should be admonished, creepers shunned. In this discussion we should not get bogged down and derailed by alcohol and whether it's a factor. We know 100% sober people are creeps, so let's stay focused.

2) Unlimited alcohol is unprofessional, unhealthy, and culturally exclusionary. Note how in 2 I don't need to mention creeps. But I could: alcohol is the number one date rape drug. Contrast with how in 1 I shouldn't IMHO mention alcohol. It's a distraction from the core point.

I don't see it as exclusionary, because every conference I have been to has offered unlimited softdrinks along with alcohol (which is usually limited to one or two free drinks)

I've been to one where there were no free soft drinks but the alcohol was free...it was infuriating. I left early.

I'm really sorry for that. This has been my experience too. It's exclusionary for all types of non-drinkers, Muslims, recovering alcoholics, people like me who can't drink for medical reasons, etc.

I also really hate UK academic drinks culture. It's one of the things that's so much better in academia in the USA.

In the UK many events are unlimited drinks. To be clear, that's a world apart from 2 drinks per person. So yeah, my experiences are dramatically different.

Yeah, I haven’t been to any conferences with unlimited drinks and there’s almost always been non-alcoholic options (and I think they should always be available)

It's very different worlds we inhabit and I'm glad it's safer/more professional where you go!
