My problem, and I assume Danielle's is, we don't get why ask if "accepting"? Why not just send CV and ask if they want you?

That's what
@Ivuoma said too. If I understand her tweet on this!2 replies 0 retweets 0 likes -
I dont know where yall are based but the way the US system works, it would be even worse to ask if they want you bc they generally wont make that determination until they have all the applications. It's just supposed to help you "get on their radar" so they can look for your app

I'd want someone who reviewed all the apps and felt mine was strong and a good fit.

Really??? So people just show up with funding (I saw another tweet of yours) and find mentors? Interesting

Same here in the UK.

Replying to @o_guest @djnavarro and
There are exceptions, but they are rare. And it definitely doesn't go down like in these tweets.

Yeah the system in the US (and Canada?) is way different. Profs have near complete control over who is admitted so to improve their chances, people try to connect in advance. You can see how it would be rife with bias/exacerbate disparities.

Profs have control over who is admitted here too. But you still interview separately. The funding is a different story, way more complex — can't boil down into a single tweet. Also I'm just talking psych and in the departments I've worked. Can't speak for whole UK academia!
