Why would a student ask generally though? The weird thing is not asking IMHO but the general. Why not just ask would you take me? That's what confused me.

See that's the thing. I would find it more polite if I was given more info to consent to and less emails back and forth. So must be cultural here.

To answer this question in my case, in my field students always do rotations their first year. You’re not directly admitted to a single lab. Thus I want to make sure some interesting PIs plan to take rotation students next year before I apply to that school.
