Each application (or email) costs time (and money, for applications), and I worry that emails introduce bias in evaluation: they don’t include all required/relevant materials - like recommendations - and some people are more likely to email than others
So before full application review, I only respond with facts (yes I’ll be taking a student this year, here are the requirements) which I try to make broadly available, and subjectively evaluate all submitted applications at once
