I just love that quote - it sums up so much that has frustrated me over the years listening to people informing others about the correct way to do science.

TBF I think the question is a little cheeky even troll-y: "Does it make sense to be scientific about everything in our universe except the future course of science?" I'm not into scientism & humans, and scientists, are decidedly not scientific nor scientism-ic about everything.

Hmm I took it as mere hyperbole but that’s a fair point.

I always took it as a criticism of scientists asserting themselves as "doing their science" through evidence-based inference, but not interested in considering "how could we do our science better" in any context other than "my experience says this is the best way/the problem"

I don't think we (none of the mentioned people herein) disagree. However, IMHO the "way we do science" pertains more to the scientific method. And I know, it can be more broad, but I do often dissociate between "the method" (indeed methods, plural) and peer review, etc.

That being said, they (the methods, the reviewing paradigms) are all truly "the way we do science". And the lines are getting even more blurred vis-a-vis by above dissociation since RRR and pre-reg generally affect both publication methods and research methods.

One thing that worries me is it does seem that journals are getting more invasive in the way we do science (think of what I just said regarding pre-reg, for example) and not less. And it doesn't seem right on some level to me.

In a principled way "not right", like my gut feeling. But of course I am sure there will be evidence either way forthcoming since it seems a big shake-up is underway to give journals more power in some specific respects.

That sure does worry me. I have gotten cold feet from the journal pubs model for that reason (undue power and control over what we do and how we do it) among others.
