For my seminar (Master's program CogNeuro), I am looking for papers/articles that argue in favor of or against AI (gladly with focus on machine learning) as a means of understanding mind/brain. General design of seminar is intended to be a pro and cons discussion format.

AI! However, if you know interesting reads about comp cog neuro as a means of understanding the mind, that’d be awesome as well!

I think we disagree on the meanings of some words — but I'm happy to offer some reading you might benefit from & might fit your bill: 1. "This special issue explores the growing intersection between mathematical psychology and cognitive neuroscience." https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S002224961630116X …

      2. Levels/layers of analysis/abstraction are needed to do any interdisciplinary work in this area, e.g., see: "[A]lgorithmic models can be used to interpret brain imaging data, and brain imaging data can be used to select among competing models." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25823496

      3. Finally, I would argue understanding what CogSci is, why it exists, what it tries to do and why, to put it really concretely, the figure at the wikipedia page has both "neuroscience" and "artificial intelligence" as nodes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_science …

Not saying CogSci is perfect, but it exists for a reason — and understanding shortcomings as well as strengths in how science in this field is done is useful IMHO for doing what you describe in your OP.

I guess before I recommend any further stuff, when you say "AI (gladly with focus on machine learning) as a means of understanding mind/brain" — could you unpack it a little? What aspect of AI is being used? Methodology, modeling, something else?

Definitely modeling! Both papers that you suggested are already very helpful. I suspect the Palmeri paper to be great to get into the topic, which can be challenging for psych students, who haven't thought much about mind/brain in computational/mathmatical language
