Gender-neutral singular 3-twitter-character words to use in modern media (unicode). Prefer one of those, or "they"?

If you want something 3 characters long (why though?) look to the historical ones like "ou" and so on. Also don't forget we have the pronoun "one" too — and even generic "you" (but that confuses many people)! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third-person_pronoun#Historical_and_dialectal_gender-neutral_pronouns …

But I am not sure why so much effort needs to be made the avoid the lovely and respectful "they"!?

I've got no beef with "they"—I'm pretty sure I still conjugate as third-person plural when nominative or subjective, though. "They're in the garden" as opposed to "they is in the garden." That's not a principled stance, it would just be so jarring to use the latter.

Yes. That is how one uses "they".

Also a big fan of one (as you've just used it)- I inevitably end up adding awkward caveats to "you." That's totally unrelated to gender, I'm just letting it be known.
