It's crazy how strongly learned some of these words are. I've been working to scrub the 1st and 3rd from my vocab (esp in prof context). I'm so glad y'all is "in" (esp living in Texas, since that's already what people use!)

Yeah, I'm not perfect either. "Girls" is easy but not using "guys" is hard AF. "Bitch" I haven't used for a decade though.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. FWIW, I think they're bad in that order guys < girls < bitch. Especially growing up in California "you guys" is used by everyone to refer to everyone. So it's gender specificity is mostly lost in practice.

It's not though. So "how many guys have you slept with?"

When I say not using guys is hard I mean I still don't use it in the so-called gender neutral way (to describe groups of any gender) except once or twice a year. So my slip ups aren't that often. And when I slip it's with a guy usually which helps me not feel too guilty.

The others I just don't do. It's not hard. Calling women "girls" or "females" is really easy to avoid because I don't see them as children or animals. 😅

Once I had the realization about it, it was quite easy. I think a lot was leftover from my youth... when at least it made some sense!

I also love the word "peeps" for "people". My sister's been using that one before it was cool ;)

Always wondered: a group of individuals from both genders... Can I greet them saying hey guys or would this only refer to the men in the group?

Ideally don't do it. There are many alternatives. https://subfictional.com/language-matters-stop-using-guys-to-address-mix-gender-groups/ …

I struggle with not using guys, because I want a gender neutral alternate that is 'casual' (I work with teenagers) however I'm Australian, and we definitely don't use the terms folks or y'all. I would love an alternative!

I don't use y'all but I do use "you all", "all", "peeps", etc. There's lists of alternatives on Google. Pick your favourite! 😅

Peeps would work instead of guys! (with the added benefit of giving the teenagers a reason to laugh at me for trying to be cool)
