Not sure I’d really meant to capture the spirit of #Cyprus in quite this way!? :-) (From my book, ‘The Cyprus Problem: What Everyone Needs to Know’.) But here’s the full background story from the classic by Doros Alastos, ‘Cyprus in History’. https://twitter.com/o_guest/status/1036239507367096321?s=21 … #Templarspic.twitter.com/I32Azc6Zgf

All I know is my village [Lefkara] hated the Venetians more than anybody and yet when I looked up where my DNA emerged... I'm mostly Italian...🤣pic.twitter.com/qZUh3xynzS

Haha! These things produce some fascinating results. It would be interesting to run it on inhabitants of the villages where there is supposed to be a direct link with Crusaders, such as Fikardou (Picardy) and Lazania (Lusignan). Cypriots of French origin? (@iioannides)

What is Italian DNA and was it formed with the creation of Italy? Αμαν με αυτά τα ΔΝΑ, ήρθεν ο πελλός στην πόρτα μας... :-)

OK, I will try to make this explanation as simple as poss: DNA is merely called Italian due to geo location of where it first emerged. In the same way one might call a rock Italian if found within the nation of Italy — even tho it doesn't care about nationality. Hope that helps.

It is sad though that people get upset about this and in many cases correctly so because such misunderstandings can lead to very basic very dangerous racism. DNA does emerge in specific geographic locations just like species emerge in specific geographic locations.

So not exactly ο πελλός στην πόρτα μας but indeed ο φασίστας στην πόρτα μας. Be careful indeed.

So to recap just because a lot of my DNA first emerged in the geographic location we now call Italy does not in of itself and by any meas make me Italian. Nor to be 100% clear does it make me any less Cypriot either.
