PSA: on twitter, muting is your best friend. If you engage, 9/10 you are simply feeding the fire. I mute liberally and often because, I know the next time that person is rude I may not have the presence of mind to disengage. And drama here really helps no one.

No one here owes a reply, explanation, or anything else to anyone else. For me, it's a medium for networking and professional communication. I reserve the right to not interact with mean people, just as they have the right to scream into the void.

Good advice -- thanks! I have no trouble muting re. some topic I really don't care about. When it feels like an issue of import, and there is a lack of understanding, the teacher in me wants to try to educate. But you're right--this is not the venue.

Exactly. I have a very strong disposition to defend myself, and also I like to educate. But over time I have learned that twitter is really not an ideal venue for either and that once the red lights blink you will regret not muting 95% of the time.

Blocking IMHO is better than muting in many cases. I have noticed certain trolls even when muted will use my list of followers/whatever to harss, e.g., more women in science.
