Yeah maybe too direct, but it's hard hard to accept criticism passively when it's wrong and made by mean jerks who are dumb. I usually just take a walk.

It's hard to take criticism and yes, extra hard when it is or seems misplaced. This is a lesson that everybody needs to learn & I hope they do so without violence as a crutch. Even if directed at inanimate objects it can create an unwelcoming workplace.

What's a good cathartic activity that isn't implicitly violent? It's good to have a moment to acknowledge frustration and remind the team that we are all in this together. Chocolate and whiskey might not be inclusive enough. Beach day?
-
There's a few issues here to unpack as I personally get catharsis from chats. But to be direct: not putting a post-it that refers to another human on the speedball, to imply hitting them in the head or similar, might be a start here.

I'm with you there and I was pitching a beach day in good faith as better thing to do than destroy an effigy. Boxing is super fun cardio but also violent and awful. I can't do it anymore without thinking how ritualized violence is less of an outlet than a gateway.
-
Oh, then we're on the same page. We went bouldering once (my idea) with the lab, that was fun. But yeah, a mix of different things to remain inclusive are needed. Not everybody (I wouldn't) feels OK in a swimming suit in a social-work environment.
-
Bouldering YAAAAAS! Just scary enough to build up some confidence that you will prevail. Maybe freezing things in liquid nitrogen is on that level for an in lab activity.

That’s from a lab at my old Uni. Don’t know the guy, but Danish humor usually is anti-PC (and racist in my experience). It aims to shock even if it’s stupid. So, I’m not surprised and I agree. That said, the IMC lab guys I know are great people to work with.

That's awful.

I'm shocked it's a white dude who thinks it's hilarious.
