I sometimes wish I had a "Cypriot-sounding" surname (which I'd have had if my parents' genders were reversed) so Cypriot students would come to me based on that. I've missed out on many Cypriot communities because of my surname and now I'm painfully homesick & it's not helping.
In Cyprus it's more a case of immigration due to nationalism, just to be clear though.

How so?

For example, Greek Cypriots tend to be very nationalistic (and still are) towards wanting to be Greek (obviously a different nation but still a form of nationalism) and uniting their island with Greece. For some context, albeit imperfect, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyprus_dispute#1918_to_1955 …

Right, ok. It looks awfully complicated. I've never been the most nationalistic, so I've never really understood it should be complicated. But I understand your situation.
-
Yup. Genocide is really tricky to transcend and learn from and many choose not to.
-
Add LGBT to that and we are talking another level of complicated. I'm sure you'll find people who support you, being Cypriot or not, and hopefully will make you feel at home wherever you are.
