Content/Trigger warning: ableist language

Just asked someone I hardly know to avoid ableist language on the Mastadon social.scholar instance ("dumb" in this case) - wouldn't have been surprised (based on Twitter) to get abuse back - but no.

to them, and this instancehttps://twitter.com/o_guest/status/1033386202328702976 …

Having said that - I struggle with the instance-specific rules - it's not "Twitter where everyone's a scholar and cares about not being awful", and that is taking considerable getting used to >

I love on Twitter the way my TL is full of a really diverse mix of selfies, cats, science, scholarly comms, speculative and romantic fiction, social justice, running - but this instance most of that would be considered off-topic, and thus put behind a CW >

I expect I just have to get used to this - or look into finding another instance that has a similarly decent set of members, but where I feel more comfortable Tooting my content/feel like I belong better.

Or follow more diverse people so your followers include people who post cats?

If you look at who I follow, a lot of them are not on http://scholar.social so my TL is quite mixed and I have a lot of cute animals.

BTW, Olivia, when you respond to cute animal posts (or in general stuff that's off-topic for http://scholar.social ) do you tend to do it from your http://scholar.social account, or set up accounts on those instances you're most interested in, to engage with people there?

I would. I don't think it matters. If you read the rules carefully it says you can change the privacy settings for those replies. But I have a huge migraine and I am not an expert. It's probably worth asking socrates on there — they are really nice and responsive.
