But maybe I am in fact missing the forest for the trees. I’m open to any advice on this. 10/10

I have no silver bullets and I'm sorry your training and others' didn't include learning deeper principles so you can switch to another language easily. I put some links at the bottom of http://neuroplausible.com/matlab that might help, like: https://www.enthought.com/white-paper-matlab-to-python …

But there's no simple solutions and it's tough. I really agree with most of the advice here. Good luck!

I’ve spent the last few years of software engineering working at boundaries of systems written in different languages, so I have opinions!

but one of the key suggestions I have is to look for boundaries that already exist (embracing Conway’s law) and tools that would let you separate and bridge them

for example, if you have a way to call Julia from Matlab, or vice versus, you might be free to send one team off into the other language, but keep the part that must remain in Matlab so

Just to be clear, I don't think they are deving in Matlab. Just writing short analysis scripts if I understand correctly.

most code ever written has been “short analysis scripts” (Excel counts, IMHO) and the tooling for doing these right is even more important than for the high end skyscrapers of “software industry”

Amusing — that's not too far off my Victorian house.
