I love Matlab, but all of these issues are fair and valid points. I don't think Python is necessarily the solution, but there are other languages and each have their trade offs. https://twitter.com/agricolabs/status/1031249162199818240 …

Have you guys tried Mathematica? It has a steep learning curve, especially if you are not used to functional languages, but it's dazzlingly, deep, smart, consistent and useful. And the animations,.... (No, I do not own shares. :-)

Have tried it before, but only limited fit for me. Depends what you're trying to do, e.g., modeling, sure! But for fMRI and EEG analyses, I don't think it's suitable (or makes sense to be made to be).

What is it you need for fMRI that is not present or natural in Mathematica? (just curious)

A toolbox that can process fMRI data--task designs, BOLD activity functions, statistical tests to appropriately deal with time and spatial correlations. E.g., what SPM toolbox does (https://www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/spm/software/spm12/ …)

I have used it back in 2006. Wasn't particularly impressed. But anyway, is Mathematica #opensource or free? Python is both.

You used and were not impressed by Mathematica?? Wow.

Well, same here. Used it a bit in 2010 but wasn't impressed either.

I sincerely wonder what you tried to do with it and how. I'm not easily impressed by software or languages at all, but once I got the hang of it, it completely blew my mind. But perhaps I use it for different things.

          Like writing a tweet-sized simulator for the St. Petersburg paradox :-) cost = 10; n = 1000 Table[Total[ Map[(2^(# + 1)) - cost &, RandomInteger[GeometricDistribution[1/2], n]]], {n}]
