I know people doing it now and it's easy enough for them because they are White etc., so I mean personal circumstances are important to take into account too. I did it in 1988 because I had no choice as being stateless is not very good. 😅

Indeed that's a frightening prospect. I'm sure you're right & it is much easier for white / CW applicants. Even so there's a kind of random kafkaesque cruelty to the HO now. eg. the way they treated @sampendu who is now happily enjoyed life in NZ!https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/dec/29/german-neuroscientist-told-to-leave-uk-residency-application-rejected-monique-hawkins …

He didn't follow the rules, which I was assuming the person would though. Not I agree with the rules, but most applicants, whether white or not, tend to perfectly follow the rules.

I did follow the rules but the changed the rules after I submitted my application... Leaving that aside, I never complained about the copy&paste way of how that is done. Many people less privileged than me could easily run afoul & be terrified to death by that - and they were :/

Oh, shit. That's awful. I had no idea that the rules changed. Ugh. I'm so sorry. 😢

It's a common feature to the Home Office. They like to change things without telling anyone... My complaint was mainly to prevent confusion for other less able people going through this. I went to the news when it was clear they hadn't changed a thing.

For instance, if someone failed to send in an original passport they could just request it. That's what Immigration NZ would do. But no, the Home Office sends you a form letter (sometimes still with [placeholders]) telling you to leave the country where you are legally resident.

To top it off, the whole process is also corrupt: When @monlouhawk case was in news (which inspired me to talk to @guardian) the Home Office suddenly reverse it's "unappealable" decision after a few days. So it's clearly not about following rules.

There is clearly some racism in this system - the Windrush scandal shows that. But what Monique & I complained about is the arbitrariness & indifferent cruelty. This process should be fair to everyone. Fair does not mean equally broken for all.
