Water lilies!

If water lilies double for 60 days, what is the surface area that they will cover? Find the results from the poll & correct answers in this blog: https://irisvanrooijcogsci.com/2018/08/16/water-lilies/ … via @irisvanrooij #exponential

For those who like threads better than blogs, I’ll give a short summary here: The correct aswer is *more than the surface of the earth*. How much more depends a bit on whether or not you interpreted ‘60 days’ as including or excluding day 1.

I also asked in a follow up poll how large the surface would be for a tiny water lily of 0.001 x the original size. The correct answer in that case is somewhere between a sea and an ocean.

Here is an overview of people’s responses to the poll for the first scenario (normal water lily, pink), and the second scenario (tiny water lily, white).pic.twitter.com/gUePdGookQ

Here’s a link to the original poll btw:https://twitter.com/irisvanrooij/status/1025118298269261824?s=21 …
Iris van Rooij added,
Iris van Rooij @IrisVanRooijPlease RT. Consider following scenario (poll follows). In a pond lies a water lily. This species of water lily has the property that it doubles every day. So on day 1 there is one lily in the pond, on day 2 there are two, on day 3 there are four, on day 4 there at eight, etc.Show this thread1 reply 0 retweets 1 likeShow this thread -

This is a total tangent (sorry!) but my house growing up has water lilies and I used to incorporate them into digital collages I did as a late teen. Very beautiful — especially IMHO the veins under the pads. My favourite is this one: https://www.deviantart.com/olieviya/art/Caustic-Causes-34144644 …pic.twitter.com/F6uMhfqy1y

Oh, and another tangent: your website is pretty and tidy! Did you make the theme/layout yourself?
