As a non-EU immigrant this is interesting to learn. I didn't go through any of this, but possibly it all came in after I arrived here (2006)

Interesting. So coming from Australia back then it was one application via post with a few passport photos + proof of ID & job offer. No DNA or finger prints or police registration. I recall something about them maybe performing criminal record checks on their end but that was it

Well,
@samhforbes did it more recently. If you're curious if it has changed for Australians we can ask him!1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -
Except with PhD offer (his case), not job offer, although there might be overlap.

I dread to think how it has changed. I eventually got my UK citizenship in 2014 (I wasn't going to bother but a friend told me to do it NOW in anticipation of the growth of the far right) & they were bang on. I would not want to try now. UK is a different place.

I know people doing it now and it's easy enough for them because they are White etc., so I mean personal circumstances are important to take into account too. I did it in 1988 because I had no choice as being stateless is not very good.

As an Australian who just got ILR can confirm the commonwealth link doesn't help much these days (at least for ILR). Long forms, tons of extra documentation, £3000 in fees, and many vague threats of deportation if anything is incorrect...
