It's fine you don't like a large cross-sectional study. It's also fine you criticize it. It's also fine you don't like its promotion. It's fine to point potential competing interests.

What is NOT fine is to start throwing in conspiracy theories that would make anti-vaxxers gasp in awe. About the author's surname (?!), different affiliations (we don't all start our day with an update of our social media), about his/her retweets (people retweet for many reasons)

It's also not fine that when people, authors included, invite some dialogue, you react like someone suggesting drowning your cat and give no benefit of doubt or dialogue. Authors of papers you really dislike might not- gasp- be terrible people. It's ok to talk to them.

I know this will be unpopular, but really the whole evangelical, "us against them for eternity" (where them can be anyone u disagree w/) & blind indignation makes a well-defined segment of "open science" Twitter really problematic. And frankly quite tiring.

But hey. you are out to SAVE SCIENCE. Who cares what you tread on in the meanwhile.

I highly doubt science needs saviors. Not half as much as it needs decent humanbeings doing their jobs in a decent way. The rest is self-serving, grandstanding performance. But twitter seems to have a disproportionate representation of them.

I wish I knew more of the context here. Is it more about a study on IQ and race and/or gender? Or more about a study on power-posing? Because these rough categories of studies seem to be treated vastly differently by the same kind of crowds for whatever reason. Hmm.

Sorry no, it's about the large cross-sectional study about exercise and mental health.https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanpsy/article/PIIS2215-0366(18)30227-X/fulltext …

I guess that's somewhere in the middle.
And thank you for giving some context! I find with some issues, due to who I follow/follows me, I suffer from context collapse because I genuinely never see their (= whoever's) tweets.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -
What amazes me is the incredibly short fuse between "research that I think is crappy" and "author is terrible".

Some people live for this shit.

I think I have a very thick skin w/ these things (so bullies, self-righteous rants, lessons, misinterpretations, WHO IS REALLY BEHIND ALL OF IT etc BS leave me unfazed), but then I remember others probably really feel hurt.
