Could @cogsci_soc and other conferences on AI, philosophy & psychology please adopt this policy as well? Not just states and provinces, but avoid countries in general that are unsafe for LGBTQ+ folk.

I fear people in Cyprus, and similar, countries which have huge oppressed LGBT+ communities are left alone by the international community to basically die or to leave their country (like I did).
-
So this is actually a very complex issue and if Western-run conferences ignore non-Western developing nations because they are bigoted, we might lose a chance to help the people in those countries.
-
Had similar thought in parallel. Yes, dialogue is needed.
-
Inclusivity isn't just for Western people, yup.

an education conference held in Cyrus actually got bad reviews from a gay friend due to the atmosphere there —
-
Yes, it's VERY homophobic. My brother, who is from there and lives there permanently, had a period with daily rape and death threats.

-
A human rights organisation and lawyers had to get involved. Nobody was brought to justice but (because it's a small place and she is a bit confused misguided) my mum called one of the perpetrators up and asked them to stop, which they did.

This is just one event out of many for him growing up gay there. And again one of the many reasons I left as an LGBT+ person too. Most LGBT+ people leave. Huge huge brain drain. We need help.
