Confession: After trying last year, but so far failing to learn Python to any reasonable degree (which I still hope & plan to, just haven’t succeeded yet), I’ve recently been quickly learning some R using @djnavarro’s wonderful online resource: http://compcogscisydney.org/psyr/index.html #rstats

Ofc, I‘ve lots to learn still (as I wouldn’t yet know how to use R to answer substantial research Qs I have) but in only a few days I did get through most of the exercises in the ‘core’ part, and I was even able to impress my children with some turtle figures.

Youngest wasn’t too impressed with the standard hexagon. She asked for a
instead. It took some hacking but I managed! Yay!
It may not look perfect, but her “Awww!” upon seeing it was priceless

Oldest required a bit more work to impress, but by sheer luck I succeeded with this figure.

All in all I am not able yet to make fun games to play with my kids (like Danielle’s rabbit game
neither with or without lasers

Perhaps you think: ‘How can a computational cognitive scientist not already rock at coding?’ My research involves mostly conceptual & formal analyses. But some research Qs require simulations & working on my skill set. This thread is to celebrate my small achievements so far

Thanks
Reason I didn’t finish learning Python yet (to degree I can use it for research) is mostly lack of time (see: https://twitter.com/irisvanrooij/status/1028582523658489856?s=21 …), but determined to make different choices & organize my time & science differently in future, e.g. reserve time for things like this.Iris van Rooij added,
Iris van Rooij @IrisVanRooijLearning R now, for fun, during my holidays. But would be better if we—academics—had more time during working hours to develop skillset & keep up w new developments, instead of expected to magically keep up while running treadmill of teaching, service work & grant applications.Show this thread2 replies 0 retweets 3 likes -

Let me know when you have time. Hopefully I can point to some useful stuff.
