I have never understood the fact that Americans need to "register" to vote. In Sweden you automatically get a voting card in the mail, then you go to the designated voting place for your area and vote, done.

You also have to register to vote (only once when you are 18) in Australia. But the reason we have to is we don’t have a person number so I don’t think they would be able to keep track of everyone unless they used Medicare cards or something like that ...

Do you have MPs in Australia that are allocated per geographical area? If so, then you need to register so they who you are voting for, right? Same in US/UK.

Yep,you can either enrol through your state (geographical area) elect. commission or the Australian one and you're registered to vote in both elections I believe. Funny story, I once got a letter that said I voted twice and I had to explain myself (1/2)

Turns out when my sister went to vote they marked her off as me and so they had giant books where my name was crossed off once in each book (2/2)
