I have never understood the fact that Americans need to "register" to vote. In Sweden you automatically get a voting card in the mail, then you go to the designated voting place for your area and vote, done.
It's partly because we and they have a system with MPs which are geographically allocated.

I think it's mostly because countries like SE/DE/AT/NL have compulsory population registration at the local town hall. UK/US cities apparently find out who lives where by some decentralised form of osmosis.

Interesting. Fun fact: Where I'm from originally not voting is a crime and we can all vote for the Archbishop too in the same type of election using the same election booklet.

In Sweden you can write what you want on the vote, every election some hundred people vote for Donald Duck

After I lived in Lund for a year nothing in the US has made sense to me.
