I think there's definitely a lot in what you say but there's a huge difference between EU and USA.

Sure, but I'm not from mainland Europe either. Cyprus is geographically in the Levant/Middle East.

TBF I don't think Cyprus should have joined the EU given the rules (not given any moral or ethical positions I may hold) of the EU anyway — something which EU officials have also admitted: it was not ready to join.

Ultimately if/when Turkey joins, then I will say unequivocally that it has worked out well for Cyprus. Until then I not entirely decided. Fig leaf stuff is just well, superficial.
