intriguing, that the CS technology that has (probably) created the highest research output and input in the last decade is now being labelled as “alchemy"

Indeed! I suspect that these people have very specific interests in promoting a different, classical, unsuccessful approach...

back to KD45. Still plenty to do of course, but labelling this new, amazing, technology as “magic”, “alchemy”, etc does not help

Yes! The reason this message remains is because places like Less Wrong stoke the fire of BS 24/7. With stuff like Roko's Basilisk, Bayes versus Science, etc., etc.

People, academics, need to speak out and often — exactly because the other side is much more vocal and powerful.https://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/10/25/will_ai_spell_the_end_of_humanity_the_tech_industry_wants_you_to_think_so/ …

If you think LW are marginal... Sadly starting to connect the dots becomes depressing how high up their influence is. https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Roko's_basilisk …

It's no coincidence Musk reads their BS, dates people based on their BS:https://www.inverse.com/article/44612-elon-musk-grimes-rococo-basilisk …

Also with respect to "alchemy". Agreed on some level, but the worst ABSOLUTE WORST, aspect is not any specific casting of AI as bad but the utter inability to debate without reference to LW BS. Some AI is bad, some AI is alchemy. Really recommend this BTW:https://youtu.be/x7psGHgatGM

Hmm, some AI is done badly for sure but I guess that that applies to any "young" discipline where research is still at a "trial and error" stage. Reminds me of steam engines and thermodynamics. We need more math analysis a la Mallat.

I'm not sure the point is it's done badly per se. Just that it's not always done scientifically. That's fine and AI/ML can choose to be engineering, science, or both.

At least, that's my point.
