Hi Olivia, we actually say “mitochondria is” because that’s how the phrase is used in pop culture. While commonly used, it is wrong, and that’s part of our point. Public science education in the US needs a massive overhaul, and our mission is to help fill in the gaps

Why not "Mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell." I realize this is some sort of meme (https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/mitochondria-is-the-powerhouse-of-the-cell …), but wouldn't it be better to educate people rather than propagating things that are wrong?
